hey! here are some random hcs i have about emu & hiiro's relationship, and some songs/random stuff from pinterest that remind me of them. that way, if for whatever reason you have to write them for me, it'll be a little bit easier on you ^^; wheeeee midsized ships.

first off, some selections from my emuhii playlist, located here:

and now the meat of it, aka headcanons and general rambling!

• one thing that lives rent free in my head is this one tumblr post i saw that was like "emuhii is bad because it's all about how emu would try to fix hiiro." and on some level i'm sure that's true, but it doesn't give hiiro enough credit; hiiro would try so hard with emu.
  • hiiro doesn't want to make the same mistakes twice; he doesn't want to mess this up, too; he doesn't want emu to feel like he's not needed, even for a second. (cross-reference chou superhero taisen at the end when hiiro's like "doctors like you are also needed"... yeah)
  • hiiro engaging in emu's interests — he's going to learn about video games. (maybe by the end of the year he'll stop saying that emu's switch is his wii.) he's going to figure out emu's favorite foods and music and try to help him in small ways (laundry! in the ex-aid novel hiiro specifically notes how emu's going to do his laundry for some reason!!!)
  • and that means open and healthy communication too. obviously hiiro struggles with this (thinking about episode 16 when he seems like he's about to confess, "i just want to heal the patient in front of me", "what if you end up like the coroner"...) but if it's for emu he will try his fucking hardest. even if he doesn't know what he's feeling, he's going to try to put it into words, because emu is so so so important to him, and he deserves that much.
  • now that being said... hiiro will fucking pine. hiiro will pine so much. because emu's the sun and the sun is kind to everyone; hiiro's not special, not in that regard. (episode 33 is it? when emu's like "but if [bringing saki back] will make you smile, hiiro?" that made me ache because that's how emu is with all his patients.) and hiiro's a secondary rider, he's repressed, he's got a little internalized something or other going on, but more than that, hiiro wouldn't act on his feelings if he didn't think it would make emu happy.
  • i feel like hiiro's love language is gifts. he's going to get emu, like, random video game related items and emu's gonna be like "omg an et cartridge... for me........."
• and on emu's part, we have:
  • so in the ex-aid novel we learn that emu's type is cute. and hiiro is adorable. his little quirks — the way he eats cakes, how into medical news he gets, the way his face looks when he's being teased — emu would think hiiro's the cutest. and he would fluster the shit out of hiiro calling him cute and pretty and adorable all the time. especially when hiiro blushes.
  • and my god does he ever love hiiro's smile. that smile is worth more than a big nugget in a pokemon game. but hiiro's such a rigid perfectionist that he doesn't let many emotions pass through. emu wants to be a reason that hiiro smiles, but he wants to see everything hiiro feels, too. (and every time hiiro lets that vulnerability slip through it's like emu's won something.)
  • i also feel like you could do something with... like... yeah emu wants to see hiiro smile and be the reason... but also emu coming to the realization that it's because he's into hiiro, not just because that's the way emu is. if that makes any sense? like it's not about caring about hiiro as his coworker or a patient but because he likes hiiro.
  • emu's love language is physical touch and he's SO cuddly with hiiro (who loves it even if he'd never let it show on his face). sitting on his lap to play video games, holding his hand, hugging him even when they're at work where hiiro insists on being professional... hell yeah

the rest of the ex-aid cast's thoughts on emuhii:

• poppy pipopapo (my actual wife, who i'm married to) knows what's up like RIGHT AWAY. sees hiiro's giant stupid crush in 4k and is aware of it from ~episode 6 on. and she'd probably be their number one supporter because it's two people she loves being happy! if anyone is going to set these two up and act oblivious (she's stronger than god and knows exactly what she's doing) it's my poppy for sure.
• kagami haima is also fully aware of what's going on because my dude you usually have a *group* of surgery interns not just the one... he'd totally be chill about hiiro being gay no matter what hiiro himself has twisted up in his mind to believe. and he'd think emu would be a great son in law.
• kiriya on the other hand. he knows about hiiro's crush and would help him with it, under circumstances, since he's the most... like... chill about liking dudes sometimes out of the ex-aid ot4. that said is he going to take every single chance he can to tease hiiro about it before then? yeah, yeah he will. kiriya's got emotional intelligence, though, and he wouldn't go too far or make hiiro uncomfortable. he'd just also tease a lot. i also feel like kiriya would be the person emu opens up to about his feelings for hiiro for first, and also the most frequently, lmao.
• taigaaaaaaa. taiga's hard because like, yes, i love emuhii, i remember the exact date they changed my brain chemistry forever (november 18th 2022), but it is also a huge part of my headcanon that taiga's been pining for the hospital director's beautiful son since before zero day. so i think taiga would silently pine and be like "i want my beloved to be happy" about it, and nico would just call everyone involved gay
• dan kuroto is in gamer jail and could not be reached for comment.
• i also don't like pallado like at all but since he's connected to emu idk you could do something with him? i know he's very popular so if you want to include him feel free! just make him apologize for hitting poppy
